WHAT TO BRING
(if you already have them; if not, we’ll talk about how to get them)

• Valid current identification with photo (driver license, State-issued ID, military ID, student ID, passport or any other form of legal identification)
• Your calendar, to make note of important dates
• Unexpired AZ Department of Safety Fingerprint Clearance card
• Unexpired First Aid / CPR certification card
• Tuberculosis Screening certificate (less than 1 year old)
• Immunization records – Mumps/Measles/Rubella (for Children’s Programs and Child Care volunteers and interns only)
• Bring any of your completed Emerge! paperwork to the “Volunteer Rights & Responsibilities” session

GENERAL INFORMATION

 

Dress comfortably. The training is a casual environment. (If you get chilly easily, you might want to bring a sweater.)

 

All trainings are held at 2425 North Haskell Drive, Building 4, Tucson, AZ 85716. This is the building at the northeast end of the Wings of Freedom Apartments (the only door accessible outside the fence). Haskell is one block west of Alvernon (next to Walgreen’s); Wings of Freedom is located just north of Grant, behind the fenced-off gas station. Find us on Google Maps!

 

NO ONE IS AVAILABLE TO ANSWER THE DOOR IF YOU ARE LATE. Please be considerate of your classmates. Arrive a few minutes early to sign in, grab a snack, and get situated. We do usually start on time.

 

Bring your own lunch – we will only be taking a 30 minute break. Beverages provided at lunchtime. Our facility has a refrigerator, freezer, microwave, and filtered water available for your use.

 

It’s important to attend the entire session each day. We are not able to schedule makeup sessions, however, you are welcome to repeat any Emerge! training session any time it is offered. INTERNS: please consider this carefully, as you may not be able to complete your internship on time if you miss any training. You must complete all training prior to beginning your assignment.

 

If we haven’t connected yet on scheduling a personal interview or your application is otherwise incomplete, please come anyway, and we’ll get it done shortly after your training. Interview scheduling priority currently goes to applicants for the Making It Better Internship program; all other positions will be interviewed once those positions have been filled. We appreciate your patience with the process.

 

INTERNS: If you have applied for an internship for academic credit, all training hours count toward your total hours for the semester. It also means you have more limitations and expectations related to attendance and scheduling.

The Workshop will be Friday, March 26, from Noon-2 p.m. at Emerge!’s Lipsey Center, 2545 E Adams Street, Tucson, 85716. Pre-registration is required. To register, please contact Robin Kaslly, 520-795-8001 ext. 7013 or email robink@emergecenter.org.

The workshop will be presented by attorney Moniqua Lane of Tucson law firm Miriam R. Kennedy Law Offices.

What is it? Making it Better is a series of educational support groups for parents and children who have been victimized by domestic abuse.  The parent group is facilitated by staff from Emerge! Center Against Domestic Abuse, and children’s groups are led by staff and trained internship students. 

Children’s groups focus on teaching problem solving, anger management and communication skills.  Teenagers learn about gender stereotypes, coping skills, and healthy dating relationships.  Parents discuss how domestic abuse has affected family relationships and learn tools to strengthen relationships with their children.  

Where is the group? The Angel Children’s Center, 4101 E. 22^nd St (near Alvernon/ 22^nd)

When is the group? The group begins Wednesday February 18, 2010 and occurs every Wednesday for 12 weeks.

What is the purpose? To help parents and children strengthen their family relationships, learn coping skills, reduce isolation and break the cycle of abuse.

How much does it cost? The program is free and children’s groups are provided for all ages.

How do I sign up? Please call 881-7201 in advance to register and complete a phone intake. The group will be closed to new members after the 2nd session so be sure to sign up right away!

Emerge! will be presenting its new model for helping those suffering from domestic abuse, as well as displaying its travelling art show Life Beyond Abuse (with art proudly created by Emerge!’s participants ) highlighting October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
