My Heart Speaks Ten Languages
Thank you to Lusia for leaving her legacy at Emerge!.
The depth of Lusia Slomkowska’s commitment to others showed in her final plans. Last fall, Emerge! received an incredible gift from Lusia’s estate. As a poet and a feminist, Lusia has always been committed to women’s causes and the challenges of everyday life. She was inspired tremendously by her mother who had lived in a Polish work camp as a child and marked by her own life-long health issues. Although she struggled with her own health, she had a compassionate heart for the many people that she met in her travels in Eastern Europe and the young people in the United States that she encouraged in their writing and educational endeavors.
“Lusia was a mainstay of the University of Arizona Poetry Center’s classes, workshops and discussion groups where she contributed greatly with her talent as a writer and her keen powers of analysis,” said Wendy Burke, Poetry Center Librarian. As a published writer, a dedicated teacher, and an activist—she was a true humanitarian. Close to the end of her life, her friend Sat Bir asked her to write the beginning line to a poem, Lusia said, “my heart speaks ten languages.” Lusia lived 40 years longer than her doctors predicted, she will continue to live on through her generosity to Emerge!. With Lusia’s support, we will help our participants create their own heart’s language.
