For the last 18 years, Emerge and Tucson Center for Women and Children before us has held a Mother of the Year Luncheon. In 2020, the Mother of the Year Luncheon is undergoing a philosophical change, and will now be called “Survivor of the Year.” The purpose of this philosophical change is to open the award to any survivor who comes to Emerge seeking support, regardless of gender identity or whether or not the survivor has children.  By changing the name, we are committing to make visible the experiences of ALL survivors and honoring all stories.

This year’s luncheon features our 2020 Survivor of the Year, who will share their incredible journey of courage and strength throughout their experience with domestic abuse.

Our Keynote Speaker this year is Beverly Gooden.

Beverly Gooden breaks down the myths and misunderstandings around domestic violence to illuminate the complex reasons why victims stay in abusive relationships and what you can do to help.  Recently the Me Too movement has shown us what our society considers acceptable can be changed by the work of many individuals coming together to speak with a unified voice.

Known for creating the viral Twitter hashtag #WhyIStayed in the wake of several high-profile domestic violence incidents, Beverly sparked a national conversation about how society views victims while calling for a community response to this important social issue. Drawing on her own gripping tale of overcoming an abusive relationship, Beverly provides you with a personal account of how it feels to live in fear and why it’s so difficult for individuals to leave those who exert physical and emotional control over them.

The luncheon will also include a raffle and silent auction, and an award ceremony to honor those in the community who have answered the call to end domestic abuse.
